Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated
on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout March
to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. It is a day
when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions,
whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an
occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more
importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that
await future generations of women. Organisations, governments and women's
groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global
and local gender issues.
The official United Nations theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A
promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women”

History of International Women's Day
On February 28, 1909,the first
National Woman's Day was observed in the United States.
In 1913-1914, International Women's Day also served as a mechanism for protesting World
War I. Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last
Sunday in February 1913. International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March
and this day has remained the global date for International Women's Day ever
since. In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the
war and to express women's solidarity.
1918 – 1999: Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women's Day has
grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed
and developing countries alike.
In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began
celebrating 8 March as International Women's Day. Two years later, in
December 1977, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming a United
Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace to be observed on any
day of the year by Member States, in accordance with their historical and
national traditions. In adopting its resolution, the General Assembly
recognized the role of women in peace efforts and development and urged an end
to discrimination and an increase of support for women's full and equal
participation.

Suicide is an issue many of us are uncomfortable to talk about and have trouble understanding, leaving most of us with insufficient and incorrect information about the issue and how to best support those in need. You too can save a life. With over 1 million people world wide taking their own lives each year this is something everyone should know about. TELL has developed a range of workshops aimed at reducing the myths and stigmas surrounding suicide and providing skills we can all use to support someone in need.

Caroline Pover will talk about some of her adventures in writing and

TEDxTokyo conference on May 11th
We're gearing up for our 5th annual TEDxTokyo conference on May 11th and
it’s looking to be bigger and better than ever before. It will all be happening
in our new home - Tokyu's Hikarie building in Shibuya and as in previous years
the event will be live streamed in both Japanese and English.
Our theme this year is '1+1=11'. Put simply, don't take things for
granted, don't be constrained by traditional views. As we all know, the best
